Solent Medical Skills are just back from The Big Sick 19 (TBS19) conference in Zermatt, Switzerland. It was an honour to take part in this friendly, informal conference about critical care and emergency medicine, meeting people at the top of the pre-hospital field and learning from them about state of the art practice. The overall theme was the resuscitation of the sickest patients, with a specific focus on what we do during the first hours after the critically ill or injured patient is presented to us. As well as the usual conference lectures, valuable practical sessions took place in the outdoors. Amongst topics like advanced ECMO (Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), REBOA (Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta) and pre-hospital ultrasound etc., the take away from the event for us and many of the delegates was – do the basics really well. This is something that Solent Medical Skills strives to do and we will continue to push this on all the courses we deliver. We have come away with seeds of ideas that if proven, could improve outcomes for patients (including the morbidly obese) during arrest-watch this space!
